I’ve been a paint-by-number artist for eight years, and more than five years ago I began designing brushes specifically for this hobby because I couldn’t find what I wanted in ordinary artist brush sets. Paint by number has its own challenges: impossibly tiny spaces, narrow points, awkward little corners, detail work that requires control, and paints that don’t always behave the way we wish they would.

Developing my brush line wasn’t a matter of picking a few small brushes from a catalog and putting my name on them. I spent nearly a year testing hundreds of brushes, experimenting with different shapes, sizes, handle styles, bristles and construction, and figuring out which combinations actually worked for the way paint-by-number artists paint.

Every brush in this set was selected and specifically designed to have a job.

The four spotters give you a progression of sizes for those tiny PBN cells, narrow sections, points and intricate details where control matters most. The 10/0 Mini Flat adds another option for small areas where a miniature flat edge can give you better coverage and precision than a pointed brush.

The new ergonomic mini handles were also chosen intentionally. They give you close-up control without a long handle getting in the way, and each brush is clearly marked with its size and type so you can quickly grab the one you need.

And because I apparently believe brushes should be both functional and ridiculously cute, each Melanie B. brush family has its own color. 💚
